Mortal Kombat
May. 13th, 2024 08:49 pmI came to the realization recently that about 70% of the time when a friend and I talk on the phone (which we do just about every day, I love this guy) I end up opening the Mortal Kombat wiki for one reason or another. He doesn't even like MK, and I'm only a vague outsider fan of the first 3 games. But I've always had a sort of fascination with the aesthetics of the trilogy - the contrast of the live-action characters and the nightmarish backgrounds looked so unique to me. And the ultra violence was a plus, of course. So I thought it might be fun to share my opinions on them here since I haven't posted an entry in a while... (;>_>)
SIDE NOTE: I know fuck all about the lore beyond the very, very basics, and I judge everything else on how cool they look, so take everything I say with the smallest grain of salt possible. Or largest. Depends on how salty you like it?
MORTAL KOMBAT 1

Last one for MK2 is going to be Kahn's Arena. It isn't particularly interesting to me except for Shao Kahn being spread eagle like a HUSSY. Put that shit AWAY you nasty, freaky hoe!!!

MORTAL KOMBAT 3

Then there are the Badass Fire Skull Pillars, aka Scorpion's Lair. Need I say more, really...
Well. Even if you wanted me to I couldn't, sorry. It speaks for itself. Scorpion was chilling (figuratively, idk if he liked it, probably not) here before MK3 happened. What do you think he did all day? I bet it got pretty boring.

I've realized now he's kind of painfully moe. His """good""" ending is he gets reprogrammed by Sub-Zero to kill Shao Kahn and does so, but after that he just doesn't know what to do with himself since he isn't given any other orders and ends up getting trapped in the desert while meandering around. The fact that I have something very wrong with my brain means I find this very cute and endearing.
Later on I guess he gets his soul back and becomes fully human, but at that point I've lost interest. If I can't install a toaster in him without feeling weird about it then what's the point?
Anyway... that's it for now, if you've read this far then I seriously commend you. I've been kinda busy lately, or at least busier than I usually am (which is not at all). I recently passed my written driver's test and tomorrow I'll be driving with an instructor which I'm nervous for. But I'll be alright as long as nobody else is driving on the roads. So if you live in California, please stay home tomorrow from like, noon to 3 PM, thank you. 👍

Tbh, not much to say about this one. HOWEVER apparently this one had the first ever secret character in a fighting game, which was my main man Reptile.
What I like about old games are the "myths" that used to surround them back in the day, like you know in GTA everyone was like, ohh you can find Bigfoot. You can see CJ's mom's ghost if you stand in this specific spot. And people would believe that! I mean I'm one to talk, I really thought you could unlock Waluigi in Mario 64 DS.
... But anyway, when it comes to MK specifically they really fed into that kind of stuff with the weird, convoluted steps you had to take to fight Reptile.
You had to get a double flawless victory without blocking then perform a fatality, while fighting in the Pit stage, AND either witches or Santa have to sail past the moon in the background (and they don't always appear, either). After that, then you'll be transported to the bottom of the pit to fight Reptile. Like, what the hell??
Apparently it didn't work for every arcade cabinet either, so imagine spending all that time just to find out you're playing the cabinet that doesn't have it. I'd be pissed.
As for stages, as far as the trilogy goes they're just alright. Nothing much to write home about. I love Goro's Lair though, specifically the chained up skeleton that's somehow still intact and the creepy glowing eyes in the back.

Sonya isn't in the one, so it's an automatic 0/10. JK obviously... it introduced a bunch of new characters and you got to fight against Shao Kahn who wore this incredibly slutty outfit. Like, sorry, no other way to say that. Look it up and you'll see what I mean, it was crazy. It also introduced Friendship fatalities, my faves :3
Best part about MK2 though? THE STAGES. I'll start off strong with my favorite, the Living Forest.

I'm a big fan of faces being where they shouldn't be. The way the trees groan & roar at you too is so unsettling... it reminds me of the Killerman arena in Illbleed. Speaking of, maybe I should do a post about Illbleed sometime...
Another stage I like is The Portal. The monks floating over the red, swirling void look so cool. That and the giant, bloody orange moon give this whole scene an excellently hellish, otherworldly look.

Oh fuck yes. EVERYONE is here (well, looking at the Ultimate edition at least) including some new characters too. I love telling this story but years ago, when I was a wee shrimp (like, 10 maybe) there was a MK3 cabinet at the bowling alley I used to go to. I played a few rounds as Sheeva totally enraptured by how cool she looked, and I ended up being kinda obsessed with her, way more than I had been with male characters. And then 7 years later I came out as a lesbian. So, thank you MK3.
Sonya also returns with a new outfit and hairstyle that looks so cute. And Sindel is introduced in this game too but I already went overboard with the Shao Kahn comments earlier so I think I should keep my mouth shut for the good of mankind.
Anyway... last thing I'll say about the characters (Post-publishing edit: I'm lying), but Kabal (also new) has one of my favorite fatalities. He removes his mask, revealing his scary ghoulish face and literally scares the other fighter to death. It's kinda like the cracked-out version of Scorpion ripping off his skin and using his evil fire skull powers. Or whatever the hell he does, you know what I mean.

As far as arenas go, it's really hard to beat the Living Forest. The ones that are here, I don't have much of an opinion on beyond "I think some of them look neat". The story in 3 focuses a lot more on Earth Realm so obviously most of the stages take place ... on Earth.
I do really like the look of the Street arena though, Shao Kahn's evil temple and the red swirling vortex look so cool contrasted against the empty city street. And the newspapers on the ground fluttering in the wind are a nice touch, you can't have a dramatic city scene without them.

Last one I wanted to talk about is kind of a doozy and I'm about to go on a tangent so buckle up.
So, Jade's Desert is like, whatever. It's honestly really boring, except for poor Cyrax trapped in the sand!!
